More about this artwork

Welcome to an enigmatic journey through Odilon Redon's vivid imagination as depicted in his masterpiece "The Chimera with Green Eyes Turns, Bays" from 1888. This artwork is a quintessential example of Redon’s embrace of the mysterious and the surreal. In this compelling lithograph, Redon channels his fascination with mythical creatures and dream-like scenarios. The central figure is a chimera, an ancient creature composed of parts from various animals, illustrated here with a fierce and wild demeanor. Dominating the scene with its dark, textured form, the chimera appears amidst a tumultuous environment, enhancing the sense of movement and transformation. The creature's eyes, suggested to be green though rendered in monotone, seem to pulsate with lifelike intensity. The background, minimal yet expressive, fades into a foggy, undefined horizon, allowing the chimera’s form and expression to command the viewer's attention. Redon’s use of light and shadow, magnificently playing across the chimera’s body, crafts an atmosphere filled with tension and impending action. This work invites viewers to delve into the depths of their own interpretations, exploring themes of inner turmoil, the coexistence of contradicting qualities within oneself, and the ever-present human fascination with the unknown.Odilon Redon’s "The Chimera with Green Eyes Turns, Bays" not only reflects his mastery in graphic arts but also embodies his ability to stir the imagination and provoke contemplation.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
