More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt's painting, "Joseph And His Brother" (1877), captures a poignant moment from the biblical story of Joseph, where he reveals his true identity to his brothers. Painted with a masterful use of light, shadow, and emotive color, Edelfelt creates a dramatic scene filled with tension and emotion. The scene is set in Egypt, rendered in the earthy tones of desert sand and the sumptuous hues of Joseph’s finery. Joseph stands confidently, draped in an elegant white robe and a vibrant blue headdress, extending his arms toward his cowering brothers. His posture and attire signal his high rank and the power he holds over his brothers, who had previously betrayed him.The brothers, on the other hand, are depicted in a mix of attitudes reflecting shock, fear, and repentance. They wear simpler garments, contrasting sharply with Joseph’s regal appearance, and their varied poses suggest an array of responses as they recognize their brother whom they once sold into slavery. The setting within what appears to be a palace chamber, with hieroglyphs decorating the walls and columns, pulls the viewer back into history, emphasizing the painting’s narrative rooted in ancient times.
