More about this artwork
This striking work by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, titled "Silhouet (Vrouw in schommelstoel)" or "Silhouette (Woman in Rocking Chair)" from 1913, captures a serene yet profound scene in stark monochrome. The piece, executed in a woodcut print technique, exemplifies the artist's mastery in playing with light, shadow, and the strong contrasts inherent to this medium. The composition depicts a woman seated in a rocking chair, her form presented as a bold black silhouette against a finely textured background. The stillness of the figure contrasts dynamically with the intricate linear patterns of the wooden floor and chair, as well as the horizontal stripes on the wall, giving both depth and movement to the static image.De Mesquita's clever use of negative space and silhouetted form draws the viewer’s focus on the subtleties of human presence and the everyday environment. There's an intimate, almost introspective quality to the artwork, inviting viewers to ponder the quiet moments of daily life and their fleeting beauty.
