More about this artwork

"Reading The Letter" by Francois Boucher, painted in 1764, invites us into a tranquil and picturesque pastoral scene, where the beauty of nature blends harmoniously with the intimate human experience. In this delightful artwork, two women are captured in a serene, wooded landscape, engrossed in the contents of a letter. The woman in a striking red dress, leaning comfortably against her companion, holds the letter carefully as she reads. Her companion, adorned in a soft white and yellow attire, looks on with keen interest, suggesting a shared moment of curiosity or concern stemming from the letter's message. The scene is set against a lush backdrop characterized by dense trees and a romantic stone fountain adorned with a bas-relief. The presence of goats nearby adds to the rustic charm, emphasizing the pastoral theme typical of Boucher's work. This painting, with its soft color palette and fluid brushstrokes, not only showcases Boucher’s mastery in rendering idyllic landscapes but also his skill in depicting complex human emotions and interactions.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
