More about this artwork
** In this compelling artwork by Berthe Morisot, "Apollon Révélant sa Divinité à la Bergère Issé," we witness a dynamic and sensual moment cast in mythical narrative. Drawing inspiration from François Boucher, Morisot employs a sumptuous palette and a fluid, expressive brushwork that give this scene a lively, almost ethereal quality. The painting depicts the mythical god Apollo, represented as a youthful and radiant figure, revealing his divine form to Issé, a mortal shepherdess. Morisot's treatment of the subjects combines an element of intimate immediacy with mythological grandeur. Apollo is rendered with vibrant slashes of gold and white, suggesting his godly essence, while Issé is captured in softer, fleshier tones, emphasizing her humanity.Set in a mystic forest, the background swirls with shades of green and blue, adding to the dreamlike atmosphere of the revelation. The interaction between divine light and earthly textures highlights Morisot’s skill in blending colors and forms, creating a piece that is as much about the sensual experience of painting as it is about its mythic content. This painting not only showcases Morisot's unique place in Impressionism but also her ability to reinterpret historical and mythical themes through a modern lens, making them resonant for contemporary audiences.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
