More about this artwork

"Old Woman With A Chip Basket" is a striking work painted in 1882 by the distinguished Finnish artist Albert Edelfelt. This compelling portrait features an elderly woman seated in a lush, open landscape, gently holding a woven chip basket. The woman, clad in a white head covering and a shawl draped over her shoulders, gazes off into the distance with a serene expression, embodying a blend of resilience and tranquility.Edelfelt's masterful use of light accentuates the texture of the woman's skin and the intricate weave of the basket, adding a vivid sense of realism and depth to the scene. The soft, earthy tones of the background feature gentle greens and blues, contrasting subtly with the warm hues of the red wooden building in the distance, possibly a barn, which enhances the rural Finnish setting. This painting not only captures a moment of quiet contemplation but also reflects the dignity and grace of its subject.
