More about this artwork

Mary Cassatt's painting "Woman and Child" captures a tender and intimate moment between a mother and her child. Rendered with soft, expressive brushstrokes that are characteristic of Cassatt's style, this artwork reflects the deep connection and affection inherent in a mother-child relationship. In the painting, the woman, dressed in a softly hued blouse, holds her child close, her face leaning towards the child's with a gaze that conveys love and attentiveness. The child, adorned in a vibrant striped dress, appears relaxed and comforted in the embrace, with one arm casually thrown over the mother's shoulder, suggesting a moment of rest or reassurance. The background, painted in a warm, muted red, enhances the focal point of the mother and child, emphasizing their closeness and the serenity of the interaction. Cassatt's use of color and texture adds depth to the scene, making the figures almost tangible."Woman and Child" is a beautiful exemplar of Cassatt’s dedication to portraying the natural and often understated moments of everyday life. Her ability to depict the emotional depth and simplicity of such moments makes this painting resonate with viewers, inviting them to reflect on their own personal experiences of nurturing and being nurtured.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
