More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt, a master of Finnish art, captures the serene essence of Lugano, Switzerland, in his enchanting painting, “Lugano” created in 1903. This artwork offers a spectacular panoramic view of the historic town perched by the tranquil waters of Lake Lugano. Edelfelt’s brushwork seamlessly blends architectural beauty with the natural landscape, creating a harmonious interplay of the man-made and natural worlds. The painting focuses on the aged roofs of Lugano’s buildings, detailed with a soft, earthy palette that suggests the warmth and rustic charm of the town. Prominent architectural features include a variety of buildings with traditional European designs, from domed structures to rectangular facades with visible chimneys, all nestled closely together, conveying a sense of community and age-old stability. The scene is set against the backdrop of the vast, shimmering lake, suggesting a profound depth and expanding the viewer's sense of space.Cypress trees, synonymous with Mediterranean landscapes, rise elegantly, punctuating the skyline and drawing the eye upwards, while softer, lush green foliage cluster around the buildings, softening the urban environment. This intricate composition not only invites viewers to traverse the physical terrain of Lugano but also encourages a deeper reflection on the tranquil, timeless beauty that cities like Lugano hold.
