More about this artwork
Artist:George Inness, one of America's foremost landscape painters of the 19th century, brings to life the serene yet vibrant Italian landscape in his painting "Valley Near Perugia." This work encapsulates Inness's mature style, which harmoniously blends realism with a poetic, almost spiritual sensibility. The painting offers a captivating view from a wooded hillside, gazing down onto the lush, expansive valley below. Clusters of dark, tall trees dominate the foreground, framing the scene and drawing the viewer’s eye towards the middle distance where the valley unfolds. The soft undulations of the landscape merge subtly with the horizon, under a sky which itself is a masterful rendering of gentle, diffused light.Inness’s use of light and shadow, combined with a rich, earthy palette, evokes a sense of tranquility and deep connection with nature. One can almost feel the gentle breeze and the quiet solitude of the location. The artist's brushwork, loose and expressive, allows the viewer to sense the spontaneity of his impressions of the Italian countryside."Valley Near Perugia" is more than just a visual experience; it is an intimate moment of communion with the natural world, reflecting Inness’s belief in the spiritual through the physical landscape.

George Inness (May 1, 1825 – August 3, 1894) was a prominent American landscape painter.
Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School at the start of his career. He also studied the Old Masters, and artists of the Barbizon school during later trips to Europe. There he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him; he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity (1879–1894).
