More about this artwork

This captivating portrait by the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer features Jakob Muffel, an important figure from Nuremberg during Dürer's time. Painted in 1526, this portrait stands as a testament to Dürer's mastery in capturing the essence of his subjects with remarkable realism and detail.Jakob Muffel appears in this work as an aged man, his face pensively marked with lines of time, suggesting wisdom and experience. The portrait intimately engages the viewer with Muffel's direct gaze, which is both stern and introspective. Dürer's use of color and texture in depicting the soft white collar beneath a fur-trimmed robe creates a vivid contrast that emphasizes the subject's dignified presence. An inscription at the top of the painting provides Muffel's age and the year of the painting, enhancing its historical significance and personal depth. The darker background isolates Muffel, focusing attention entirely on his quiet yet imposing stance. This painting not only showcases Dürer's skill as a portraitist but also immortalizes a figure of historical significance, offering a window into the character of those who lived during the Renaissance era.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
