More about this artwork
In Camille Pissarro's painting "Automne, Peupliers, Eragny" (Autumn, Poplars, Eragny), the canvas bursts with the rich, transient colors of fall, capturing a serene moment in the countryside of Eragny, where Pissarro lived in his later years. The artist uses light brush strokes to imbue the scene with a lively texture that almost quivers with the gentle autumn breeze.Dominating the composition are tall, slender poplars, reaching into a soft sky dappled with light blue and gray hues. The leaves of the trees are depicted in a kaleidoscope of colors, from fading greens to warm shades of orange, yellow, and red, suggesting the change of seasons. Below, the earth is carpeted with lush greens and the sprinkled colors of fallen leaves. The painting presents an intimate interaction between sky and earth, highlighting the cyclic beauty of nature."Pissarro's technique integrates the essence of Impressionism, focusing on the natural effects of light and color, which bring this peaceful rural scene to life. This work not only reflects the visual charm of Eragny but also evokes the tranquil passage of time in the countryside.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
