More about this artwork

We cordially invite you to delve into the intimate world captured by Albrecht Dürer in his masterful engraving "The Women’s Bath" from 1496. This exceptional piece of art provides a voyeuristic glimpse into the private ritual of bathing that was seldom portrayed during the Renaissance period."The Women's Bath" showcases a room filled with a variety of women engaged in the act of bathing. Inside a wooden room that hints at the simplicity and functionality of communal bathhouses of the era, Dürer places women of various ages and physical forms. Some stand while others sit or bend over, each absorbed in their individual activities yet connected through the communal experience.Dürer’s talent is evident in the meticulous engravings that detail every nuance of the human body, the texture of the wood, and the stonework, bringing a vibrant realism to the scene. The varying expressions and poses of the women add a dynamic element to the composition, capturing the fluidity and natural essence of the human form. This piece is not only a reflection of the social and cultural practices of the 15th century but also an exhibition of Dürer's profound skill in observation and his ability to translate it into engravings. This artwork invites viewers to ponder both the historical context and the timeless beauty of naturalism in art.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
