More about this artwork

Max Liebermann, a prominent figure in German Impressionism, gives us a rare and intimate glimpse into his artistic world with this self-portrait titled "Selbstbildnis im Anzug vor der Staffelei, Ganzfigur" (Self-portrait in Suit in Front of the Easel, Full Length), painted in 1923. This piece offers a profound look into the reflective nature of the artist at work.In the painting, Liebermann portrays himself standing confidently before his easel, palette and brush in hand, amid the sanctity of his studio. Dressed not in typical artists' garb but in a formal suit, Liebermann bridges the gap between the traditional and the professional aspects of artistry. His face, marked by age and experience, conveys a sense of solemn introspection and dedication to his craft. The surrounding space, captured with broad, expressive brushstrokes that typify Liebermann's impressionistic style, fades into a dark, indistinct background. This clever use of lighting and focus immediately draws the viewer's eye to the artist himself and the bright colors on his palette, highlighting the creation process over the created. This self-portrait not only showcases Liebermann’s skill and style but also serves as a personal narrative that reflects his lifelong commitment to art. It is a testament to his enduring passion for painting and his self-perception as an artist.

He first studied law and philosophy at the University of Berlin, but later studied painting and drawing in Weimar in 1869, in Paris in 1872, and in the Netherlands in 1876–77.
