More about this artwork

"The Sweet Siesta of a Summer Day," painted in 1891 by John William Godward, is a captivating example of Neoclassical art that transports viewers to a serene, sunlit afternoon in an idyllic classical setting. This exquisite painting showcases Godward's skill in rendering texture, light, and the elegance of leisure in the ancient world. In the foreground, the eye is first drawn to the luxuriously detailed tiger skin rug, a symbol of exotic wealth and power. To the left, a woman dressed in a flowing orange and pink stola, exudes grace as she delicately handles a flute, her attention focused on the instrument. The meticulous detail in her attire and the soft draping of the fabric highlight Godward's ability to capture the subtleties of texture and movement. The central figure of the composition is another woman, who lies reclining on a plush crimson and white chaise longue. Her relaxed pose and dreamy expression evoke a mood of tranquil repose. She is dressed in a loose, airy teal gown, which contrasts beautifully against the rich red of the wall behind her.Architectural elements frame these figures—a columned arch opens to a view of a tranquil sea and distant mountains, enhancing the atmosphere of peaceful seclusion. The inclusion of lush greenery and classical sculptures adds to the sense of a private, luxurious sanctuary from another era.Godward's work is an invitation to revel in the quiet beauty of a moment stolen from time, where the warmth of the sun and the gentle melodies of music fill the air.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
