More about this artwork
Artist: Amedeo ModiglianiIn the evocative painting "Elvira Resting at a Table" by Amedeo Modigliani, we are drawn into a moment of introspective solitude. Created in 1919, this artwork portrays Elvira, a figure befitting Modigliani’s signature style with her elongated face and neck. She is depicted seated at a wooden table, her posture reflecting a sense of weariness or contemplation. The background is softly blended, with hues of blue and white that provide a gentle contrast to the stark black of her dress.Elvira’s face is rendered with minimalist features that convey deep emotion through slight details. Her eyes gaze downwards, suggesting a moment of private thought, and her hand gracefully supports her head, enhancing the feeling of rest or perhaps quiet sadness. Note the delicate flush of her cheeks, hinting at a live presence beneath the still exterior.A partially visible plate with blue details adds an element of everyday life, anchoring the scene in reality. However, it is the psychological depth and emotional resonance, hallmarks of Modigliani's work, that capture and hold the viewer's attention.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
