More about this artwork
Amedeo Modigliani's captivating portrait "Paul Guillaume, Novo Pilota" offers a unique, introspective glimpse into the life of the celebrated Italian art dealer, Paul Guillaume, who played a pivotal role in promoting avant-garde artists, including Modigliani himself. Dated 1915, this work exemplifies Modigliani’s signature style that merges the modern with classical traditions. The painting showcases Guillaume in a formal, yet somewhat relaxed pose, dressed in a dark suit and wearing a hat, indicative of the fashion of the time. His face captures the typical elongated features prominent in Modigliani’s work, with a stretched, oval face and almond eyes, which convey a sense of subdued contemplation or introspection. The color palette predominantly features dark and earthy tones, with the subject matter sharply contrasting against a rich, textured russet background.Interesting to note is the inscription "Novo Pilota" alongside the title, which translates to "new pilot" from Italian, signifying Guillaume’s emerging influence in steering the direction of modern art during the early 20th century. This painting not only immortalizes a key figure in the modern art movement but also captures the essence of Modigliani’s artistic approach, characterized by simplified, yet profoundly expressive forms.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
