More about this artwork

David Roberts' meticulous lithograph, titled "Gate of the Metwaleys [Bab Zuwayla], Cairo," crafted between 1846 and 1849, captures a vibrant and dynamic scene at one of Cairo’s historic gates. Bab Zuwayla, a renowned medieval gate constructed in the 11th century, serves as the focal point of this artwork. In this composition, Roberts showcases his profound skill in architectural rendering. The gate itself is portrayed in striking detail, its distinctive red and white striped stone facade towering over the bustling activity below. Each arch, window, and the patterned brickwork is brought to life with remarkable precision, creating a realistic gateway that both enchants and informs. The foreground of the painting is animated with the daily life of Cairo’s inhabitants during the mid-19th century. Various figures, dressed in traditional attire of the region, contribute to the sense of place and time. Men and women engage in conversation, trade, and movement, depicting the lively social interactions typical of a major city gateway. The inclusion of these characters not only adds color and life to the scene but also provides a cultural context that enriches the viewer's understanding of the historical and social significance of Bab Zuwayla.Roberts' work serves as both a historical document and a piece of artistic beauty, offering a peek into the past and preserving the essence of Cairo's vibrant street life juxtaposed against its monumental architecture.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
