More about this artwork

Henri Lebasque's tender portrayal of family life, "Maternité" (1900), exemplifies his aptitude for capturing serene, intimate moments. This pastel work depicts a mother delicately attending to her newborn, a scene suffused with warmth and quiet joy. The older child, dressed in a checkered garment, peers curiously, perhaps enviously, at the new sibling being nursed. This painting beautifully showcases Lebasque’s skill in using soft lighting and muted colors to evoke emotion, creating an almost tactile sense of closeness and affection among the figures.Lebasque, often dubbed as the painter of "joy and light," brings his characteristic luminosity to this composition, where light gently bathes the subjects, highlighting their gentle curves and soft gestures. The mother's softly draped gown and tender expression as she looks upon her baby enhance the painting’s emotive quality. "Maternité" is not merely a depiction of an everyday family scene; it is a celebration of motherhood, familial bonds, and the quiet moments that weave the fabric of daily life.
