More about this artwork

We are pleased to present a significant work from the painter Édouard Vuillard, titled "The Art Dealers (The Bernheim-Jeune Brothers)" created in 1908. This painting beautifully encapsulates the intimate and cultured atmosphere of an art dealer's gallery at the beginning of the 20th century. In this artwork, Vuillard depicts a scene inside the gallery of the Bernheim-Jeune brothers, who were influential art dealers in Paris. The painting features two figures: one seated at a desk, deeply engrossed in paperwork, symbolizing the diligent and administrative aspect of the art business. The other figure, posed with elegance and confidence, stands leaning against the wall, suggesting a more interactive role, possibly engaging with clients or artists. The use of muted, yet rich, colors creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, while the textured brushstrokes add depth and vibrancy, reflecting the bustling nature of the art world. Notably, the alignment of framed artworks on the right-hand side wall offers a glimpse into the prestige and variety of the gallery’s offerings."The Art Dealers" is not merely a portrait of two businessmen but a snapshot of the art industry's inner workings during a vibrant period in art history.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
