More about this artwork

"Flowers on A Stool" is a captivating painting by Édouard Vuillard, created around the years 1903-1904. This artwork is a fine example of Vuillard's intimate and tender approach to his subjects, often featuring still life in interior settings. In this particular piece, we see a depiction of a simple wooden stool covered by a delicately patterned cloth. Atop the stool, a vase of fresh flowers, possibly daffodils or a similar springtime variety, serves as the center of attention. The blooms are portrayed with a lively touch, their creamy whites and vibrant yellows contrasting beautifully against the soft, muted tones of the background.Vuillard's use of texture and color enhances the intimate feel of this scene. The painterly strokes capture the textures of the flowers, the pottery, and the woven fabric with a coziness that is almost tactile. His unique style blurs the lines between the different elements, inviting viewers to step closer and experience the cozy atmosphere that Vuillard so masterfully creates. This painting not only serves as a glimpse into Vuillard's artistic focus on the subtlety of everyday objects but also showcases his ability to transform a simple domestic scene into a profound visual experience, full of warmth and life.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
