More about this artwork

We are delighted to feature Édouard Vuillard's evocative portrait "Portrait d’Irène Montanet," created in 1931, as a highlight of our collection. This piece is a stunning example of Vuillard's mastery in capturing the subtleties of human expression and interior life. The painting presents Irène Montanet, depicted in a moment of introspective repose. Vuillard's use of soft, textured pastels on paper adds a delicate and almost ethereal quality to the portrait. The subject sits elegantly, her form rendered with swift, confident strokes that suggest her figure and attire but leave particulars intriguingly vague, enhancing the overall impressionistic effect. Her gaze is directed downward, a gesture that conjures a sense of contemplation or perhaps mild melancholy. The muted palette of earth tones, highlighted by touches of green in her skirt and the luminescent white of her blouse, frames her dark hair and defined features beautifully, focusing attention on the play of light and shadow across her form."Portrait d’Irène Montanet" is not just a portrayal of an individual; it is a window into the nuanced interplay of color, texture, and emotion, hallmarks of Vuillard's intimate approach to portraiture.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
