More about this artwork

In the engaging and intimate composition, "Madame Vuillard at the Dinner Table," painted by Édouard Vuillard around 1903, we are invited into a quiet, private moment in the daily life of the artist's mother, Madame Vuillard. This painting, a beautiful example of Vuillard’s Post-Impressionist and Nabis styles, focuses on the simplicity and warmth of domestic life. The artwork captures Madame Vuillard seated at a dining table cluttered with the remnants of a meal. The setting is rendered with loose, expressive brushstrokes typical of Vuillard’s work, blending colors and forms to create a vivid sense of life. The table is strewn with dishes, utensils, and scattered blooms that suggest the casual end of a family dinner. The artist’s use of soft, yet rich colors contributes to the warmth and tranquility of the scene. Shades of brown, cream, and soft pastels make the canvas glow, giving the painting a tender and inviting atmosphere. Madame Vuillard, positioned centrally, appears as a calm and contemplative figure. Her expression, though not detailed, seems reflective, hinting at the solitude and contemplation found in everyday routines. With its intimate scale and focus on everyday subjects, Vuillard's painting invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and subtlety of ordinary moments.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
