More about this artwork

Édouard Vuillard, a renowned French artist and member of the Nabis group, captured the essence of intimate, everyday life through his artwork. One of his notable pieces, "By the Worktable" (1905), beautifully portrays a serene domestic scene filled with warmth and quiet activity. In this painting, Vuillard invites us into a cozy, lamp-lit room adorned with patterned wallpaper that features an array of stylized floral motifs. At the heart of the artwork, two individuals are engrossed in their tasks by a worktable. Their calm engagement and the soft, muffled colors suggest a moment of peaceful coexistence and domestic harmony. The room is rich in detail, reflecting Vuillard's interest in textures and interiors. Strategic brushstrokes bring life to the space, from the intricate wallpaper to the varied textiles covering the furniture and floors. The balance of light and shadow plays across the room, highlighting a window that frames the hints of the outside world, serving as a bridge between private space and the public realm. This painting not only showcases Vuillard’s adeptness in using color and form to convey depth and emotion but also reflects the artist's ongoing fascination with the quieter moments of everyday life.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
