More about this artwork

Artist: Édouard Vuillard (1890)"Les Couturières" by Édouard Vuillard captures an intimate and evocative scene of two seamstresses engaged in their craft. Painted in 1890, Vuillard, a prominent figure in the Post-Impressionist movement and a member of the Nabis group, brings to life the mundane yet significant daily routines with an exquisite infusion of color and emotion. In this painting, Vuillard portrays two women focused on sewing a vibrant, deep red fabric. The composition brings the viewer into close proximity with the figures, reflecting Vuillard's characteristic style of tight, intimate spaces and his frequent focus on interior scenes. The background, painted in a lush teal, contrasts starkly with the red fabric, making the scene pop with a vibrant palette. The women are depicted in profile and from behind, which allows the fabric itself to take center stage, cascading between them and across the canvas. Vuillard's use of broad, flat areas of color, while simplifying details, richly conveys the texture of the garments and the absorbed concentration of the workers."Les Couturières" not only provides a glimpse into the lives of working women in the late 19th century but also exemplifies Vuillard's ability to transform ordinary moments into visually rich and emotionally resonant works.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
