More about this artwork

Explore an enchanting intimate scene from the Post-Impressionist era with Édouard Vuillard's exquisite painting, "Enfant avec gobelet" (1900-1901). This artwork captures a tender moment of everyday life, featuring a young child deeply engrossed in the simple act of drinking from a cup. Dominated by soft, earthy tones and rich textural details, Vuillard's composition pulls us directly into a cozy, domestic space. In the painting, the child, dressed in a patterned blue and white garment, is seated at a brown table, the focus and innocence of youth poignantly highlighted as the child leans over a large, shimmering cup. The background is bustling with patterned wallpapers—a characteristic element of Vuillard's work—complementing the floral motif that enhances the sensation of being enclosed in a private world. A reddish block of color to the left and dark furniture pieces, including intricately designed wooden chairs, frame the child, adding depth and warmth to the setting.Vuillard, renowned for his intimate portraits of indoor scenes, uses a muted palette and loose, expressive brushstrokes to invoke a sense of quietude and introspection. "Enfant avec gobelet" not only showcases Vuillard's mastery of color and texture but also reflects his continuous exploration of the emotional and symbolic potential of domestic interiors.

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (11 November 1868 – 21 June 1940) was a French painter, decorative artist, and printmaker. From 1891 through 1900, Vuillard was a prominent member of the avant garde artistic group Les Nabis, creating paintings that assembled areas of pure color. His interior scenes, influenced by Japanese prints, explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form. As a decorative artist, Vuillard painted theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and designed plates and stained glass. After 1900, when the Nabis broke up, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style, approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings.

Vuillard was influenced by Paul Gauguin, among other post-impressionist painters.
