More about this artwork
Delve into the vibrant world of early 20th-century art with George Barbier's enchanting painting "Le Coup de Vent," highlighting the artist's flair for combining elegance with a touch of whimsicality. This stunning artwork, created in 1914, captures a moment of sudden breeze in a delicate dance of color and line.In "Le Coup de Vent," which translates to "The Gust of Wind," we see a gracefully dressed woman caught in a playful yet challenging moment as the wind whisks her voluminous white gown and colorful parasol away. The scene is set against a serene backdrop bursting with nature's own artistry—flowering branches heavy with lilac blooms that seem to sway with the rhythm of the wind. The woman, dressed in a flowing white gown adorned with hints of blue floral details and splashes of red ties, attempts to hold onto her vividly colored parasol, which is almost inverted by the gust.Accompanied by her small, whimsical umbrella-holding companion rendered in the lower left, the composition exudes a sense of light-hearted struggle and movement. The fine lines and pastel color palette characteristic of Barbier’s work lend an air of ethereal beauty and timeless fashion to the scene. This artwork is not only a visual treat but also a fascinating glimpse into the stylized Art Deco period, reflecting the era's fashion and illustrative grace.
