More about this artwork

"Melissa" (1898), painted by the distinguished artist John William Godward, is an exquisite representation of the neoclassical fascination with the romance and ideals of ancient civilizations. This mesmerizing portrait not only showcases Godward’s remarkable skill in depicting fine details and texture but also reflects the tranquil and poignant beauty typical of his works. In this painting, the figure of Melissa is rendered with a delicate, almost ethereal touch. Cloaked in a vibrant yellow shawl with a light blue lining, her attire brings a brilliant pop of color that contrasts strikingly against the muted, leafy green backdrop. The shawl's graceful draping highlights the soft folds of her light purple garment beneath, exemplifying Godward’s mastery in portraying various textures and fabrics.Melissa's profile is depicted in a serene and contemplative state, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer, as though lost in a distant thought. The subtlety of her blushed cheeks and the gentle parting of her lips infuse life into her introspective moment. The lighting beautifully captures the smoothness of her skin and the glossy darkness of her hair, enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the painting. Not merely a display of aesthetic appeal, "Melissa" invites viewers into a tranquil space of beauty and reflection, typical of Godward's work during the late 19th century.

John William Godward was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protégé of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art.

Godward was born in 1861 and lived in Wilton Grove, Wimbledon. He was born to Sarah Eboral and John Godward (an investment clerk at the Law Life Assurance Society, London).
