More about this artwork

"La Nuit" (1883) by William Bouguereau is an enchanting depiction that combines classical beauty with a mystical aura. This compelling painting portrays a solitary female figure poised in mid-air against a dusky sky. The figure, rendered with Bouguereau's typical precision and attention to human anatomy, exudes both grace and a sense of melancholy. Her eyes gaze off into the distance, possibly contemplating or summoning the night that envelops her.She is swathed in a flowing black shawl, which sweeps elegantly around her and enhances the ethereal quality of the image. Notably, Bouguereau's skill in depicting the delicate interplay of light and shadow is evident here, as the soft light seems to caress her skin and shawl, giving the whole scene a dreamlike quality. In the background, a solitary bird flies amidst a cluster of clouds, suggesting the freedom and isolation of the vast, open skies.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
