More about this artwork

William Bouguereau's "Réflexion," painted delicately in 1905, illustrates the artist's affinity for capturing the subtleties of human emotion and the flawless rendering of the human form. This oil painting showcases a young woman draped in a flowing, translucent green fabric that elegantly highlights her natural form. She is seated with one knee propped up, while her arms gracefully rest over her legs. Her exposed shoulder adds a delicate sense of vulnerability to the piece. The woman's gaze, directed slightly off-camera, seems contemplative and introspective, inviting viewers to ponder her thoughts or the melancholy suggestions of her gentle facial expression. The muted, soft background behind her does not distract but rather enhances her form and the sense of quiet reflection.Bouguereau’s renowned technique shines in the realistic depiction of textures, from the softness of her skin to the slightly rough weave of the fabric encasing her body.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
