More about this artwork
Artist: William Bouguereau Year: 1876William Bouguereau's 1876 masterpiece, "The Three Marys at the Tomb," is an evocative depiction of a poignant biblical moment. The painting captures the emotional intensity experienced by the three Marys—Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James, and Mary Salome—as they arrive at the tomb of Jesus on the morning of his resurrection.Set within a somber yet serene environment, the artwork focuses on the figures' reactions to the angelic announcement that Christ is not there but has risen. The figure on the left, with hands clasped and face upturned in astonishment, embodies a mix of bewilderment and dawning hope. The tall, central figure, draped in a dark cloak and her hand to her face, suggests a deep contemplation or overwhelming grief. Meanwhile, the kneeling figure at the forefront, reaching out towards the tomb, underscores a natural human inclination towards tangible proof, her actions conveying both desperation and reverence.Bouguereau's use of color further enriches the narrative: the somber tones reflect the initial mood of mourning, while the soft illumination inside the tomb introduces a divine presence, hinting at the miraculous nature of the event. This painting not only showcases Bouguereau’s precision in realism and skill in capturing human emotion but also serves as a profound reflection on faith, response to the divine, and the human condition in the face of the miraculous.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was a French academic painter. In paintings of the realistic genre, he used mythological themes, modern interpretation of classical themes, emphasizing the female human body. During his lifetime, he achieved great popularity in France and the United States, was awarded many official honors, and sold his works for top prices. In the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art disappeared from the public eye, partly due to its changing artistic tastes. A resurgence of interest in figurative painting in the 1980s led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He completed 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
