More about this artwork

We invite you to delve into the depths and nuances of 'Melancholie', an evocative piece crafted circa 1924 by the artist Karl Wiener. This painting, steeped in thematic richness, illustrates a solitary female figure engulfed in a mood of pensiveness and introspection. The figure, dressed in a striking blue dress with a modest red neckline, is seated against a backdrop that whirlwinds around her, painted in deep, brooding strokes that perhaps mimic the turmoil or emotional swirl within her mind. The color blue, often associated with depth and stability, paradoxically highlights the subject's apparent state of melancholic contemplation, suggesting a profound emotional and psychological complexity.Wiener’s use of contrasting colors alongside the energetic and almost chaotic black lines that envelop the figure accentuates her calm yet somber disposition. It appears as though she is disconnected from her surroundings, lost in her thoughts. The linear texture gives a sensation of motion, which juxtaposes with the stillness of the seated figure, further intensifying the emotional weight of the scene.'Melancholie' is a powerful portrayal of the human condition, exploring themes of solitude, introspection, and the nuanced spectrum of human emotions. This piece not only invites viewers to confront the subject's inner world but also to reflect on their own moments of solitude and the beauty that can often be found in introspective stillness.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
