More about this artwork

Karl Wiener’s "Landschaft in Blau" portrays a serene and evocative landscape bathed in shades of blue. This minimalist piece, created in 1943, showcases a skillful manipulation of monochromatic hues to create depth and atmosphere. The painting features a softly delineated horizon where delicate mountain peaks rise against a lighter blue sky, interspersed with the dark silhouettes of pine trees. On the left side of the landscape, a solitary figure and a rounded tree form bring a sense of scale and solitude to the composition. These elements appear almost ghostly, conjuring a mood of introspection and calm. The use of watercolor allows for the blending of colors, which imbues the scene with a dreamlike quality, typical of Wiener’s work from this period."Landschaft in Blau" is an exemplary work that invites viewers to lose themselves in its tranquil expanse, promoting a meditative engagement with nature through the lens of artistic abstraction.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
