More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's 1940 masterpiece, "Baum und Gestirne," is a striking exploration of nature's interconnection with the cosmos. In this evocative painting, Wiener captures a solitary tree, its branches gracefully stretching upwards towards an enigmatic sky scattered with celestial bodies. The depiction of the tree, with its intricate network of branches and stark, silhouetted form, speaks to the resilience and inherent complexity of nature. The background unveils an ethereal array of celestial motifs, including various circular forms that could be interpreted as stars, planets, or perhaps moons. These cosmic elements are integrated into the composition in such a way that they appear to both emanate from and converge into the tree, suggesting a symbolic unity between earthly life and the stars. The monochromatic palette enhances the mystical and timeless atmosphere of the scene, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound connections that bind the universe's vast and varied components."Baum und Gestirne" is an exemplary piece that not only showcases Wiener's skill in drawing and composition but also his deep philosophical engagement with themes of existence and universality.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
