More about this artwork

This intricate and detailed engraving by Albrecht Dürer, titled "Saint John at Patmos," depicts a moment from the biblical Book of Revelation. It portrays Saint John, the author of Revelation, in a visionary state as he writes the apocalyptic text on the island of Patmos. In the foreground, Saint John is shown seated on a rocky terrain, engrossed in his writing, with a book and inkwell before him. His expression and posture suggest deep concentration and divine inspiration. A large eagle, often considered a symbol of high inspiration and also the traditional symbol associated with John, is prominently placed next to him, emphasizing the prophetic nature of his writings.Above Saint John, the central figure in the clouds is a radiant vision of the face of God, surrounded by beams of light that illuminate the scene. This divine appearance signifies the direct revelation from God to John. The clouds around this central figure are teeming with smaller figures, likely representing angels or celestial beings, adding to the heavenly ambiance of the scene. To the right, the landscape is dominated by lush trees and foliage, suggesting the isolated and remote location of Patmos, which enhances the mystical and secluded setting appropriate for divine revelations.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
