More about this artwork

Peter Paul Rubens, a master of the Baroque art movement, vividly captures the theme of redemption in his profound painting . This striking artwork, believed to be crafted around 1615-1616, depicts a powerful visual narrative centered on Christ’s victory over mortality and transgression. In the painting, Christ is portrayed rising victoriously, a symbol of His resurrection. His dominant stance, with one foot placed firmly on a skull, epitomizes His triumph over death, represented by the skull under His foot. The stark contrast of the deep shadows enveloping the background and the luminous glow that surrounds Christ emphasizes His divine nature and the supernatural significance of the scene.Christ is draped in a vibrant red robe, enhancing the dramatic intensity of the composition, while His open arms and serene expression evoke a sense of welcoming and forgiveness. Adding to the celestial ambiance, two cherubs accompany Him. One offers Christ a globe, symbolizing His dominion over the world, and the other holds palm branches, traditional symbols of martyrdom and victory.Peter Paul Rubens masterfully conveys both the physical and spiritual aspects of Christ's victory through his dynamic brushwork and rich, emotive color palette.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
