More about this artwork

On display at our gallery is the captivating oil sketch, "The Wrath of Achilles," crafted by the celebrated Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens between 1630 and 1635. This dynamic work vividly illustrates a scene from Homer's epic, *The Iliad*, capturing a pivotal moment of emotional and moral conflict. At the center of the composition stands Achilles, the greatest of the Greek warriors, in a dramatic confrontation with Agamemnon, the commander of the Greek forces. The tension is palpable as Achilles, gripped by rage, gestures vehemently towards Agamemnon, who appears pompously seated, surrounded by advisors and onlookers. This confrontation arises from Agamemnon’s decision to claim Achilles' prize of honor, Briseis, leading to a profound rupture in their alliance.Rubens masterfully employs a whirlwind of colors and vigorous brushstrokes to convey the chaos and intensity of the scene. To the left, we see an aged advisor, possibly Nestor, attempting to counsel peace, his figure leaning into the tumultuous fray. On the right, a female figure—likely Briseis— is caught in a helpless emotional state, her arms reached out in a conflicting gesture of despair and supplication.Below, even the lion seems to partake in the scene's restlessness, pacing agitatedly near the feet of the commanders. Above, a cherub, perhaps symbolizing divine oversight or fate, adds a layer of celestial observation to the mortal turmoil."The Wrath of Achilles" not only showcases Rubens' expertise in portraying complex human emotions and interactions but also serves as a reminder of the tragic and timeless themes of honor, power, and resistance.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
