More about this artwork

Discover the divine grace of "Hygeia, Goddess of Health," a captivating masterpiece by the illustrious Flemish artist, Peter Paul Rubens, painted around 1615. This painting offers a vivid portrayal of Hygeia, an ancient Greek deity revered as the goddess of health, cleanliness, and hygiene. Rubens encapsulates her essence beautifully, merging classical ideals with his signature Baroque style. In this striking image, Hygeia is depicted with a serene, focused expression as she attentively handles a snake, which coils gently around her arm. The snake, a symbol traditionally associated with renewal and medicine, complements her role as a health deity. Rubens' artistry shines in the realistic texture of the snake’s skin contrasted against Hygeia’s smooth, luminous flesh. The goddess is draped in a rich, red garment that exudes a sense of luxuriance and vitality, drawing the viewer's attention to her benevolent act. Her exposed shoulder and the delicacy of her attire highlight her femininity and the human aspect of divine intervention in health.Rubens' masterful use of colors and fluid brushstrokes brings this scene to life with a dynamic sense of movement and emotion. This portrayal not only captures the symbolic importance of Hygeia in Greek mythology but also reflects the period’s deep respect for classical antiquities and their narratives, filtered through the rich, textural expressions for which Rubens is renowned. This painting is more than just an artistic expression; it is a celebration of health as a vital element of life, portraying the goddess who ensures it. "Hygeia, Goddess of Health" is a testament to Rubens' ability to weave mythology, symbolism, and emotion into a cohesive and mesmerizing visual story.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of frontispieces for the publishers in Antwerp.
