More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a pioneer of the Expressionist movement, created the compelling woodcut 'Kopf David Müller' in 1919. This striking piece depicts a sharply angular and intensely expressive portrait of a man, presumably David Müller, whose features are carved dramatically into the woodblock, creating a dynamic interplay of light and dark. The work is characterized by its bold, jagged lines that create a sense of depth and texture. The eyes of the figure are particularly penetrating, indicative of the emotional intensity Kirchner often sought to evoke in his portraits. The background and the figure's attire, though abstract and simplified, suggest a formality that may speak to the subject's personal or societal role. What makes this woodcut exceptional is Kirchner's ability to manipulate the harsh contrasts inherent in the black-and-white medium to reflect the complexities of human emotion and psychology. As viewers, we are drawn into a visceral response, encouraged to consider the subject's gaze and demeanor. This piece is a prime example of how Kirchner's work continues to captivate and engage audiences, providing a vivid window into the artist's view of the human condition during a turbulent period in history.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
