More about this artwork
"Davoser Landschaft mit Bergbauern" (1919), by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, is a vivid exhibition of expressionism that captures the rugged beauty of the Davos landscape alongside the simple life of its mountain farmers. This painting, awash in bold and vibrant colors, portrays the dynamic interplay of natural elements and human activity. In the foreground, several figures are depicted amidst a rich tapestry of orange and green hues, suggesting the labor and daily routines of the farmers. The fluid, almost abstract, application of paint energizes the scene, giving life to the swaying trees and undulating hills that dominate the background. Blue and white strokes in the upper sections evoke the expansive sky, contributing to a sense of openness and airiness.Kirchner’s style, characterized by the use of intense color and emotive form, serves not only to depict a scene but also to convey the emotional resonance of the alpine environment and its inhabitants.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
