More about this artwork

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's vibrant painting, "Two Girls" from 1910, showcases the distinctively bold and emotive style of the German Expressionist movement. The artwork captures two figures in an intimate setting, engaged in a moment that conveys a blend of companionship and introspective solitude. The left figure is depicted in striking tones of green and pink, seated in a relaxed yet contemplative pose. Her gaze, directed slightly downward, suggests deep thought. Beside her, the second figure, rendered in compelling shades of red and orange, conveys a sense of vulnerability as she hides her face from view, her body language reflective of sorrow or fatigue. This stark emotional contrast is heightened by the intense color palette and the expressive distortion of form, typical for Kirchner's approach to capturing emotional and psychological experiences. The background of vivid yellow and blues, with hints of black, not only anchors the scene but also adds a dynamic rhythm to the image, emphasizing the emotional turbulence present. The brushwork is loose and vigorous, characteristic of Kirchner’s style during this period.Together, these elements skillfully evoke the essence of human relationships and individual emotion, making "Two Girls" a profoundly moving piece of Kirchner's oeuvre.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
