More about this artwork

In this evocative piece titled 'Der Sämann (Säender Bauer)' created in 1905, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures a timeless agricultural ritual through his expressionistic lens. The artwork is a compelling sketch that portrays a sower, deeply engrossed in the act of scattering seeds. Kirchner's dynamic strokes and bold outlines infuse vitality into the figure, giving an impression of movement and purpose.Set against a roughly sketched background of rolling hills and a fragmented portrayal of a farmhouse, the painting focuses on the sower wearing a wide-brimmed hat, which casts a shadow over his face, adding a sense of mystery and depth to his character. His posture, bent slightly forward with one arm extended, exemplifies a moment caught in time—mid-motion, as seeds are spread across the furrowed field.Kirchner's style, characterized by the use of rapid, expressive lines and minimalistic detail, emphasizes the raw, emotional gravity of simple, everyday rural life. This piece not only highlights the physical act of sowing but also metaphorically alludes to the cultivation of ideas and the start of new endeavors, resonating with viewers across different backgrounds and time periods.'Der Sämann' invites its audience to reflect on the themes of labor, growth, and the cyclical nature of life, establishing Kirchner not just as an artist but as a poignant storyteller through his art.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important German Expressionist painters. He was a co-founder of Die Brücke, a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in 1905. Die Brücke and Kirchner took inspiration from Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch, as well as African and Oceanic art. They used woodblock printing as a medium to showcase their signature style: flat, unrealistic images with vivid colors. The recurring themes in Kirchner's artworks included exotic cultures, faraway landscapes, self-portraits, dancers and Berlin street life. His paintings and prints effectively portrayed non-European cultures despite the fact that he never traveled outside of Europe.
