More about this artwork
The painting portrays the head and upper torso of a man in profile, facing left. He has an intense and thoughtful expression, with his lips slightly parted and his eyes looking off into the distance. The man wears a textured, white fur hat and a dark brown military-style coat with distinct teal shoulder patches. A thin teal cord is draped across the coat, extending from front to back. His facial features are sharply defined with strong lines and colored with an array of hues including greens and reds, highlighting his angular cheekbones and the contour of his nose. The background, minimal and unobtrusive, is a simple brownish paper that enhances the focus on the figure.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
