More about this artwork
A large, golden-brown pretzel dominates the composition as it rests on a white plate with blue trim. The pretzel, twisted traditionally, features a glossy crust with well-baked tones that suggest a slight sheen, possibly indicating its freshness and crisp texture. Beneath the plate, a tablecloth with a blue-and-white checkered pattern stretches across the table, providing a geometric contrast to the organic shape of the pretzel. To the right, part of a wooden chair is visible, its dark form offering a solid, grounding presence next to the lighter, airy colors of the table setting.

Egon Schiele was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.
