More about this artwork
The painting "Brown And White Norfolk Or Water Spaniel" by George Stubbs features a detailed and lifelike depiction of a spaniel standing on a small overhang by a body of water. The dog is prominently displayed against a softly painted landscape that includes a blurry background of trees, water, and a muted sky with subtle cloud formations. The spaniel itself is meticulously rendered with a fluffy, curly coat primarily in white with distinct brown patches. A noticeable feature of this dog is its expressive eyes and the attentive posture, suggesting a moment of alertness or interest in something beyond the viewer's perspective. The dog’s stance is strong and balanced, projecting a sense of nobility and grace typical of Stubbs' work with animal subjects.Foreground elements include detailed plant life, such as large green leaves and some blooming flowers near the dog's feet, which add a touch of color and life to the composition. The combination of these naturalistic details with the tranquil setting evokes a serene atmosphere, inviting the viewer to appreciate both the beauty of the subject and the serenity of its surroundings. This painting demonstrates Stubbs' skill in blending animal portraiture with landscape, highlighting his profound understanding of both anatomy and environmental context.

George Stubbs (25 August 1724 – 10 July 1806) was an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs' output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. His series of paintings on the theme of a lion attacking a horse are early and significant examples of the Romantic movement that emerged in the late 18th century. He enjoyed royal patronage. His painting, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery, London.
