More about this artwork
This painting by Berthe Morisot, titled "Hanging the Laundry Out to Dry," captures an everyday scene with a delicate yet expressive touch characteristic of Impressionist art. At the forefront, we see a grassy expanse where laundry has been fastidiously hung. There are several lines of white and light-colored garments fluttering in the gentle breeze, adding a sense of movement to the scene. Two figures, possibly women, are actively engaged in hanging more laundry. They are depicted in a loose, fluid style typical of Morisot’s work, emphasizing movement and the fleeting moment rather than detailed anatomical accuracy. The background features a rural landscape, marked by the presence of a house to the right, its architecture simple and robust, painted in soft, earthy tones. The house's shutters appear slightly ajar or closed, hinting at an ordinary day's quiet rhythm within. The environment around the house includes lush green fields and scattered trees, extending into the far distance under a broad, lightly clouded sky that occupies the upper part of the canvas. The overall impression is tranquil and pastoral, marked by the soft, luminous palette and broad, loose brushstrokes, which give the painting an airy, light-filled quality. This work not only showcases Morisot’s skill as an Impressionist painter, focusing on light and atmosphere, but also reflects her interest in depicting scenes from daily life, particularly from the lives of women at work.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
