More about this artwork
"Self-Portrait, 1918" by Magnus Enckell is a compelling example of modernist Expressionist art. The painting features the artist himself, rendered with bold, confident brushstrokes that emphasize the textural qualities of the paint. Enckell’s face is depicted with a vivid array of colors, exhibiting an intense and direct gaze that confronts the viewer. The colors used in the painting are striking, with unconventional skin tones of green, yellow, and hints of blue, suggesting a departure from realistic portraiture to a more emotionally driven and expressive approach. The background and the clothing are painted with similar boldness, utilizing deep blues and vibrant yellows, which contrast with the warmer tones of his face and the reddish hues appearing near his ears and cheek.Overall, this self-portrait exhibits a raw, almost confrontational vitality that speaks to a personal introspection and perhaps the broader existential concerns of the period during which it was painted—shortly after the tumult of World War I. Enckell’s technique and color choice contribute to the intense and almost introspective quality of this artwork, making it a distinctive and powerful self-representation.
