More about this artwork
"Girl Straightening Her Hair" is a compelling painting by Finnish artist Magnus Enckell from 1902. The artwork vividly captures a young girl in the midst of grooming herself, her right hand poised delicately through her long, flowing hair. She is seated, although only partially visible, facing a mirror which helps reflect her actions and subtle expressions.Enckell's use of brushwork here allows for a rich texture that brings out the warmth and softness of the scene. The background and surrounding elements are painted with broad, loose strokes primarily in muted tones, accentuating a sense of intimacy and quiet focus. The shadows and light are subtly balanced, highlighting the girl’s face and her action—straightening her hair—which becomes the central narrative of the piece. The painting’s charm lies in its serene simplicity and the painterly way Enckell captures a moment of everyday life. The girl, dressed in a simple white blouse, is depicted with a contemplative expression, her gaze directed slightly downward in concentration or perhaps contemplation. This combination of detail and emotion rendered in Enckell’s distinctive soft color palette makes this work an exquisite example of early 20th-century portraiture.
