More about this artwork
"The Illustrated Sporting News: Christmas Number" by Edward Penfield presents an eye-catching design that plays with Christmas and sports themes. The composition of the painting cleverly juxtaposes a cozy domestic setting with a lively array of sporting images. In the foreground, a man and a woman are depicted toasting with large mugs, a gesture that imbues the scene with warmth and conviviality. The woman, dressed in a red blouse and green skirt, holds a broom, suggesting a homely, grounded environment. The man sports a brown suit indicative of the era, and their attire together brings a hint of celebration appropriate for the season.Above this central domestic scene is a panel of illustrated vignettes showcasing various sports and activities, likely indicating the content covered by the publication. From left to right, these include a boxer in stance ready to fight, a sprinter poised to start running, and a cricketer gearing up to play. Additionally, there's an image of a man with a horse and dog cart, suggesting racing or hunting sports, and a golfer completing a swing. These panels convey movement and athleticism, contrasting with the stillness below. The overall illustration is encased in a frame-like border, adding a formal touch to the design.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
