This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Woman Reading in a Rocking Chair," captures a serene moment of leisure and introspection. The painting features a woman, absorbed in her reading, sitting in a tall, green rocking chair. She is elegantly dressed, wearing a white blouse with a cuff visible on her wrist, suggesting a genteel character. Her face is rendered in profile, engaging closely with the pages of a large book she holds. A straw hat rests atop her head, hinting at a warm, perhaps sunny day, or a casual indoor environment styled for comfort. The color palette is gentle and soothing, dominated by pastel shades of green, brown, and beige which harmonizes with the relaxed and contemplative mood of the scene. Penfield’s style, typical of his era, leans towards simplicity and clarity with bold contours and flat areas of color, which is quite evident in this piece. The background of the painting is minimalistic, ensuring the focus remains on the woman and her immediate surroundings—the chair and the book. Overall, the painting evokes a sense of peacefulness and a private moment captured in time, typical of Penfield's ability to convey simple everyday activities with charm and dignity.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
