More about this artwork
This artwork is a woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni, a renowned Japanese artist known for his works in the ukiyo-e genre, particularly focusing on the depiction of kabuki actors. The print, titled "An Actor Beside Water," showcases a dramatic figure of a kabuki actor in a dynamic pose beside a body of water. The actor is depicted with a bare upper body and wears a traditional patterned garment, called a hakama, that falls just below his knees. His physique is robust and muscular, emphasizing the physicality of the character. He is captured in a powerful stance, with one hand stretched forward holding a staff, while the other appears to grip an unseen object, perhaps suggesting tension or confrontation in the scene. His facial expression conveys intensity and determination, with sharply drawn eyebrows and eyes that fiercely engage the viewer. The background is simple and dark, focusing all attention on the actor. Delicate lines suggest the flowing movement of water at his feet, adding a sense of immediacy and ongoing action typical of kabuki theater performances, where expression through body movement and posture is key. This print likely served to capture the essence of a particular kabuki performance, reflecting Toyokuni's expertise in presenting kabuki actors as heroic, almost supernatural beings, elevated through the artist’s dramatic style and attention to detail.

Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker and painter of the Edo period. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he was the chief disciple of Utagawa Toyoharu, a well-respected printmaker. He specialized in kabuki theater prints, which depicted famous actors in performances and featured dramatic scenes from plays. In addition to kabuki theater prints, Toyokuni also produced portraits of geishas, landscapes, and scenes from everyday life. He eventually became a leading master of the Utagawa School.
